We continue our special post-season series presenting the thoughts of Richmond’s latest premiership heroes on that wonderful one day in September 2017. Today, much-improved midfielder Kane Lambert gives his insight into the Tigers’ glorious triumph.

Grand Final lead-up

“It was obviously a really exciting week. Early in the week, there was a fair bit going on and obviously a lot of people around. But it was pretty normal in the sense of when we got into the Club with our schedule, the way we trained, and the way we approached it.”

The huge crowds at training and the Grand Final parade

“To have all the Tiger Army around was pretty special. And when we run out (at training), you get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. The amount of them at the Grand Final parade, it was pretty special, and something that I’ll hold close for a long time.”

A dream come true

“I haven’t really reflected on my journey as yet . . . I never look too far ahead. But, if I was really honest with myself, I probably didn’t ever see this coming. It was a childhood dream to live out what we do on Grand Final day and I’m extremely fortunate that I got to do it with Richmond.”

The big game itself

“I remember it being quite hot early. It was pretty loud, obviously, with the crowd. Although we didn’t start that great, I did feel we were in control. I think my fondest memory was when ‘Butters’ (Dan Butler) kicked his goal on the boundary, with about seven minutes to go . . . I looked up on the screen and ‘The Chief’ (Brendon Gale) was crying . . . That was the moment I thought we’re going to win the premiership.”

The final siren

“It was in our back-50 and I didn’t know how long we had left, but when it went I was just looking around . . . The boys’ arms were up in the air and I think I was yelling, but I don’t know if anything was coming out. It was just elation and I couldn’t wait to hug the boys and enjoy it with them.”

The personal significance of the premiership

“It’s been a crazy few days. I probably haven’t actually sat down and thought about what we’ve achieved. The funny thing is, I actually can’t wait to get back on day one of pre-season and do it all again. Obviously, our destination winning the premiership was sweet, but for me it’s the journey that makes it all worthwhile. And the boys we go on that journey with, that’s the most important thing to me . . . Our little journey along the way is what makes it so special.”

The Tiger Army

“They’re unbelievable . . . loudest, proudest and most loyal fans in the world. It’s an absolute privilege to run out and play in front of them on a weekly basis. I think they’re going to be even bigger and stronger next year. They were on that journey with us and, to see how happy it made people, to break a 37-year drought, and to see people crying and hugging, that’s what makes it really, really special.”
